North and South Wheatley Women's Institute
NORTH & SOUTH WHEATLEY WI
Our WI was established in 1955 and currently has 33 members. We are a warm, friendly and fun group of ladies from local villages and we meet on the second Monday of the month at 7.15pm in Wheatley village hall. Visitors and new members are always welcome.
At the February Annual General Meeting Sharon Rowland was elected as our new President. Anne Garratt won the competition trophy. We then had an amusing and interesting talk from Alan Ryder about his 30 years experience as a fireman.
In March our speaker, Maureen Taylor, told us the history of Medieval and Tudor gardens and how they still influence garden design today. She came attired in full Tudor garb that she had made herself!
The speaker at our April meeting was Anne Hickman who has been a volunteer for the Royal British Legion, Retford and District branch, for 14yrs. With her personal anecdotes, our group was enthralled by Anne’s talk and it showed what an amazing service The Royal British Legion and its volunteers provide as well as the sacrifices that those on active service have made over the years.
April was a busy month with the Ferry Group meeting at Everton which was thoroughly enjoyed by the members who attended and the guest speaker Colin Anderson talked about his time as pastry chef to the Royal Household. The spring council meeting at Nottingham with speakers Lynne Stubbings (WI National Chairman) and Charles Hanson (auctioneer and TV personality) and our President, Sharon, attended the Nottinghamshire Federation centenary civic reception at Newark Town Hall.
At our May meeting we welcomed Dr Anna Scott, a gifted speaker, who gave a brilliant talk about the history of the Mayflower Pilgrims and the forthcoming 400 years anniversary celebrations.
